Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Peninsula, Ohio (June 9, 2011) – This summer, young adults will get the chance to hone their music skills with classically trained musicians by day, while sitting around the campfire in a traditional summer camp setting by night.

The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is partnering with the Akron Symphony to offer the first Summer Music Camp for middle and high school age musicians at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center.

"The Summer Music Camp with the Akron Symphony adds to an already stellar list of summer camp options," said Deb Yandala, CEO of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. "This partnership provides a tremendous opportunity for young musicians to challenge themselves by learning from professionals in a fun environment."

Campers will participate in interactive workshops, group rehearsals and daily coaching in an intense week-long experience learning about various music styles while developing their musical skills. Summer Music Camp faculty is comprised of professional musicians from the Akron Symphony Orchestra, including Maestro Eric Benjamin and Akron Symphony violinist Cory Smith.

Campers will also participate in recreational and educational activities exploring the natural world and beautiful surroundings of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Other camps offered this summer by the Conservancy include: Theatre Camp with Magical Theatre Company; Survivor Camp, which will culminate in a night spent camping underneath the stars; and Chef Camp, where children will have fun learning how to cook using local and sustainable foods. Also, Farm Camp will offer campers the opportunity to dig in the dirt, investigate where their food comes from, care for farm animals and participate in a Farmer’s Market. Residential camps begin Sunday afternoon and end early evening on Friday.

Junior Ranger Day Camp will give children the experience of learning about their national park and personal growth, while offering a fun setting. Campers will spend their days outdoors exploring the magic and beauty of the forests, streams, meadows and trails within Cuyahoga Valley National Park while earning their Junior Ranger badges. Day camp is available July 18-22 and July 24-29 for children ages 6 to 11.
