CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA TROOPS

1st Battalion, Virginia Reserves

Overview:
1st Battalion Reserves was organized during May, 1864, with nine companies. The unit served in the Richmond area and was stationed at Belle Isle guarding prisoners. Later it was assigned to General Barton's Brigade in the Department of Richmond. During the Appomattox Campaign many of its members were captured at Sayler's Creek. Only 13 men were present at the surrender. Lieutenant Colonel Richard T. W. Duke and Major James M. Strange were in command.
