Attention West Virginia 4th Grade Teachers! If you are interested in bringing your students to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal), we invite you to attend our teacher workshop Wednesday, August 16th in Williamsport, Maryland to learn about curriculum programs offered to students during the school year.

C&O Canal NHP Begins Hazardous Tree Maintenance in Montgomery County
Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park will be conducting hazardous tree pruning and removal at five locations in Montgomery County; these locations are Riley’s Lock, Marsden Tract, Violettes Lock, Great Falls, and Anglers.

Longtime Park Volunteer Historian Receives Maryland Preservation Award
C&O Canal historian, Karen Gray, received the “Outstanding Individual Leadership” award at the 2017 Maryland Preservation Awards. The Maryland Preservation Awards, presented annually by the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Historical Trust, are the highest level of recognition for historic preservation, heritage education and community development projects in the state.

Temporary Closure of Cumberland Visitor Center
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Allegany County Tourism Visitor Center will be closed to the public beginning Sunday, February 26, 2017 for approximately two weeks while major heating and air conditioning work is completed in the Western Maryland Railway Station.

C&O Canal Towpath Closure at Paw Paw Tunnel
The C&O Canal NHP will be performing a rock scaling project along the towpath at the northern or downstream portal of the Paw Paw Tunnel. A portion of the tunnel and surrounding towpath will be closed during this project. A detour route is provided for through-hikers and bikers.
