The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal can be accessed at many places along the parks 184.5 miles. Directions to the six visitor centers and one contact station are below. Please contact them to learn about park programs, ask questions, and request information.
From Northern Virginia:Head north across Francis Scott Key Bridge into Georgetown. At the end of the bridge, turn right (east) onto M street. Follow M street to 30th street and turn right (south). The visitor center is halfway down the block on the right. Parking is available in parking garage just south of the canal on 30th street. Buses may park on K Street.
By Metro:There are no metro stops in Georgetown. Georgetown shuttle buses are available from Foggy Bottom, Roslynn, and Du Pont Circle.
For pedestrians, the closest metro stop is Foggy Bottom. From Foggy Bottom metro stop, make u-turn on pedestrian walkway to 24th street and turn right. Take 24th street to Pennsylvania Avenue and turn left. Take Pennsylvania Avenue to 30th Street and turn left. Park is half way down the block on the right. Allow 10-15 minutes for walking. (Approximately 10 blocks).
From Maryland and Beltway:Take Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) south approximately 6 miles to K Street and Potomac River. Wisconsin Avenue will end at K Street. Turn left onto K Street and follow to Thomas Jefferson Avenue. Turn left onto Thomas Jefferson and the park is half way up the block on the right. Parking is available in parking garages on K Street and 30th street.
Maryland: Take exit 41 (Carderock /Great Falls, MD), follow Clara Barton Parkway to the end. At the stop sign, turn left onto MacArthur Blvd. Follow MacArthur approximately 3.5 miles into the park. MacArthur Blvd. ends at the park.
Virginia: Cross into Maryland over the American Legion Bridge (beltway inner loop) and take exit 41 (Clara Barton Parkway) Westbound, left at fork. Follow Clara Barton to the end. At the stop sign, turn left onto MacArthur Blvd. Follow MacArthur Blvd approximately 3.5 miles into the park. MacArthur Blvd. ends at the park.
From Washington DC:
Take M Street to fork. You can follow either MacArthur Blvd, the right fork or take Canal Road, the fork to the left.
MacArthur Blvd.: Follow MacArthur until it ends at the entrance to the Great Falls section of the park, approximately 8 miles.
Canal Road: Follow to Chain Bridge. At stop light continue straight ahead. Canal Road changes into Clara Barton Parkway. Follow Clara Barton Parkway to the end. At the stop sign, turn left onto MacArthur Blvd., and follow it for approximately 3.5 miles until it ends at the park.
From Frederick, Maryland:
Follow Interstate 270 south toward Washington, DC. Take exit 5 (Falls Road). Exit right toward Potomac on Falls Road. Follow Falls Road 6 miles until it intersects with MacArthur Blvd.. At stop sign turn right into the park.
From the East: Take I-270 north to 70 west toward Hagerstown. Merge onto US-340 west via exit 52 toward Charlestown/Leesburg. Take the MD-17/Burkettsville Road exit toward Brunswick. Turn left onto MD-17/Burkettsville Road and pass through one roundabout. Turn right onto MD-17/MD-79/Petersville Road. At B Street, turn left. Take B Street to North Maryland Avenue and turn right. Turn left onto West Potomac Street and follow to visitor center.
From the West: Take I-70 east via exit 82 B toward Hagerstown. Merge onto US-340 west via exit 52 A toward Charlestown. Take the MD-17 south exit toward Brunswick. Turn left onto MD-17/Burkittsville Road. Pass through one roundabout. Turn right onto MD-17/MD-79/Petersville Road. Turn left onto West B Street. Turn right onto North Maryland Avenue. Turn left onto West Potomac Street to visitor center
Sharpsburg Pike, MD 21782
From Martinsburg: Exit 16E Queen Street. Turn right onto WV 45E/Martinsburg Pkwy/E Moler Ave. Turn left onto WV 480 N/N Duke St. Cross the bridge over the Potomac River (MD 34E). First left after the bridge.
From HagerstownI-70:Exit 29 MD 65 S toward Sharpsburg. Turn left onto MD 64/Sharpsburg Pike. Turn right onto MD 34. House is on the right just before crossing the bridge over the Potomac River into WV.
From Hagerstown I-81:Exit 26 to I-70 W toward Frederick. Exit 29 MD 65 S toward Sharpsburg. Turn left onto MD 34. House is ont ehr ight just before crossing the bridge over the Potomac River into WV.
From the East: Take I-270 north to 70 west to Hagerstown. Take I-81 north and south exit. (Take exit 26 toward Harrisburg/Roanoke). Merge onto I-81 south toward Roanoke. From I-81 take exit 2 and merge onto Potomac Street/US 11 south. Follow straight to visitor center at bottom of hill, (approximately 1.4 miles).
From the West: Take 68 east to I-70 east/US 40 east/ US-522 South exit, (exit 82AB toward Hagerstown). Merge onto I-70 east via exit 82 B toward Hagerstown. From 70 east take exit 24 and merge onto MD-63/Williamsport Pike. Travel two miles to Williamsport. Turn right onto US-11/MD 63/East Potomac Street. Follow to visitor Center.
From Martinsburg, WV, heading North: Take I-81 north and cross the Potomac River bridge. Take exit 1, Route 68-Williamsport immediately after crossing the bridge. Make a left onto Route 68, through three stoplights to junction with Route 11. Turn left onto Route 11/Potomac Street. Follow Potomac Street to visitor center.
From Harrisburg, PA, heading South: Take I-81 south. Take exit 2, Route 11-Williamsport. Route 11 is also Potomac Street. Follow Potomac Street to visitor center in Williamsport

From the East:Take I-70 W to Hagerstown/Hancock and exit to left off interstate exit 3 (MD-144 to Hancock). After the ramp bear right on E Main St. and make the first left hand turn. Park in the C&O Canal parking lot. The Hancock Visitor Center in the Historic Bowles House is to the right of the parking lot as you are driving in on the access road (note that the Hancock Maintenance yard at the opposite end of the parking lot is only accessible for official business).
From the West:From the National Freeway take the I-70 E exit 82AB to Hagerstown/Hancock/Winchester. Continue on I-70 and exit off interstate exit 3 (MD-144 to Hancock). After the ramp bear right on E Main St. and make the first left hand turn. Park in the C&O Canal parking lot. From the West: Take exit 43C off 1-68. Make a left at Queen City Drive at bottom of ramp. At traffic light make another left onto Harrison St. Follow Harrison to the visitor center in the Western Maryland Railway Museum.
