On March 17, the National Park Service Director's Award for Excellence in Natural Resource Stewardship through Maintenance was given to Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Facility Manager, Jackie Messer.  The Natural Resource Stewardship awards, which were created in the early 1990s, were presented to Messer and other National Park Service employees at the annual George Wright Society meeting in

New Orleans . "The American people have entrusted the National Park Service with care of amazing places we call national parks," said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. "Within our ranks we have a corps of skilled professionals dedicated to natural resources, and we recognize employees who go above and beyond in performance of their duties with special awards.”

Messer recently directed the installation of “Big Belly” solar trash compactors in Chickasaw National Recreation Area. He also directed the installation of animal-proof recycle and trash containers at campgrounds and championed the relocation of overhead electric lines to improve the visual landscape. By using motion sensor lights, photo cells, and other recycling practices, Messer has helped the park conserve resources. In his most visible contribution, Messer has saved the underground aquifer that supplies water to Vendome Well 110 million gallons of water per year by completing the installation of an actuator valve on the artesian well to reduce flow by 36 percent. In addition, Messer has made major strides in implementing a recycling program at the park which will greatly reduce the waste stream associated with trash collection. “We are very fortunate to have a group of outstanding employees here at Chickasaw National Recreation Area,” said Superintendent Bruce Noble, “but Jackie Messer’s recent award recognizes some very special contributions he has made that will enable us to better serve our park visitors.”
