In celebration of the holiday season, Superintendent Bruce Noble would like to invite the public to a Holiday Open House at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The Open House will be held at the former Superintendent’s residence from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Wednesday, December 15, 2010. The residence is located at 716 Hwy 177 S., approximately one-mile south of the 4-way Hwy 7/Hwy 177 intersection in Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Built in the early 1930s, the Superintendent’s residence was intended to serve as the home for the park’s Superintendent and family. The site was chosen at that time because it offered views of much of Platt National Park (now the Platt Historic District). Work began on the house in late 1932 and it was completed before the Civilian Conservation Corps camp was established at the park in 1933. The residence was significantly remodeled in the 1950s and is currently used for seasonal staff housing. Although the landscape around the house has changed, it retains much of its original character.

Park staff would also like to invite the public to enjoy the park this holiday season. The park is open daily for wildlife observation, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities. The Travertine Nature Center is open daily 9:00 am –4:30 pm, except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.

“As we celebrate the end of another year, we are thankful for the opportunity to protect one of America’s treasures and provide visitors with a place to relax and reflect,” said Superintendent Bruce Noble. “We hope you will join us at the open house for light refreshments and conversation as we celebrate the holidays.”
