March for Parks - Helen Fields

March for Parks has been an annual local event since 1995 and over the years has raised approximately $62,000. These funds have been used for, "Let Nature Be Your Teacher" field trips, and projects benefiting city parks and local school playgrounds such as: Joe Stanley Smith, Riverside, Puckett, Sunset, Alta Vista, Head Start, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. City Park, and Cruz Fernandez Park. Past projects have provided funding for playground equipment, shade trees, a watering system, garden plots, benches, and "safe landings" for playground areas.

March for Parks is America's only national walking event for parks and open spaces. The event in Carlsbad is just one of hundreds of marches (in the 50 states) that will take place in conjunction with Earth Day. Local environmental, school, youth, business, and other park-advocate groups organize the events in their communities. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, US Forest Service, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and the Happy Valley Community are sponsoring this year's event in Carlsbad. All money raised will remain in our area and help fund improvements at Happy Valley Community Park as well as class field trips.

This year's community walk will be held April 20, 2013. Registration will be located at the base of the Ocotillo Trail between 9-9:30 am. The walk will proceed up the trail to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. Earth Day events at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will begin at approximately 9:30 am and will include refreshments, activities, and prizes for the walkers. Come prepared for this walk by bringing your own water, sunscreen, hat and appropriate footwear. Carlsbad Police Department will patrol the route.
