March for Parks – Annual Fund Raiser for Local Parks
CARLSBAD, New Mexico – March for Parks is an annual fund raising walk that has raised approximately $74,000, locally, since 1995. The funds have been used to purchase playground equipment, shade trees, a watering system, garden plots, benches, and "safe landings" for playground areas in our community. In addition, the funds have been used to sponsor "Let Nature Be Your Teacher" local school field trips, and projects benefiting city parks and school playgrounds such as: Joe Stanley Smith, Riverside, Puckett, and Sunset to name a few. This year, a portion of the money will help fund improvements at Happy Valley Community Park as well as sponsor various school field trips.
March for Parks will take place all across the US on April 26 with local environmental, school, youth, business, and other park-advocate groups organizing events in their own communities. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, US Forest Service, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and the Happy Valley Community are sponsoring this year's event in Carlsbad.
The 1-mile walk will begin with registration between 8:45 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. at the base of the Ocotillo Trail on the NMSU-Carlsbad campus. Walkers will proceed up the trail to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. Events at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. and will include refreshments, activities, and prizes for the participants. Please bring water, sunscreen, a hat and wear appropriate walking shoes. For traffic safety, Carlsbad Police Department will patrol the route.
