Question 4. When was the land in the park bought by the government?
Answer: In the 1930's, the federal government bought some lands that were submarginal (eroded and in poor shape) near large cities and developed them for recreational opportunities, with the help of the Works Progress Administration, the Civilian Conservation Corps, state, educational, nonprofit, and local organizations.
The Catoctin Recreational Demonstration Area transferred from the Resettlement Administration on November 14, 1936. On July 12, 1954, it was renamed Catoctin Mountain Park.
