Climbing the Cape Lookout Lighthouse

In 2018, the NPS began the preservation studies and condition assessments needed for a renovation project for the lighthouse - this process was delayed for two years due to the pandemic. While the lighthouse is not in any peril, it does need a full restoration to protect it into the future. This will include repair and treatment of all metal surfaces, replacement of glass panes, repair of the ventilation system, replacement of windows and doors, replacement of the electrical wiring, the removal of old paint surfaces, and repainting the lighthouse. In 2021 during the preseason inspection rangers noted several concerns with structural components at several landings and railings. After an assessment of costs, we decided it was financially more responsible to wait for the full repairs than spend a large sum of money on temporary repairs. We anticipate renovations to be completed by the 2025 climbing season.
