Little Women's Book Club
The Little Women’s Book Club is a program that resumes every Fall, alongside Topeka’s 501 public school calendar. The Little Women’s Book Club was incepted to target 5th grade girls enrolled in any afterschool program (i.e.: PM Academy), but is now open to 4th grade girls as well.
During our pilot year, approximately 12 5th grade girls participated in the program. However, since the pilot year, the program won the interest of 4th grade students who were too- interested in participating and in turn, expanded to service 4th and 5th grade girls at Ross Elementary. This past 2016-2017 academic year, Little Women’s Book Club had 32 active 4th-5th grade girl participants.
In addition to our obvious priority: increasing and developing the literacy rate among 4th and 5th grade girl students, the Little Women’s Book Club offers an intense and intimate mentorship to all its youth participants, presents young girls with the opportunity to forge a relationship with a public trust official and establishes community and empowerment among it’s female youth participants. The group meets once a week for the duration of the academic school year as a part of their after school program or PM Academy.
The Little Women’s Book Club can be a service availed upon the following requirements: 1) The requesting party convenes or host an after school program at their respective campus (i.e.: PM Academy or something equivalent to satisfying a 4:00 P.M.-5:00P.M. service hour, 2) The requesting party has 10 or more 4th-5th grade little women participating in the after school program and 3) The requesting party has availed a space (i.e.: classroom, meeting space, library) for the Little Women’s Book Club Coordinator to convene sessions weekly.
Any PM Academy Director, after school Program Instructor or other professionals in the field of education should channel all Little Women Book Club requests to Mynesha Spencer, our Little Women’s Book Club Outreach Coordinator at (785) 354-4273 X240.
