The only ship built by the Navy Yard in the post-World War II years, the USS Suffolk County (LST-1173) slides down the launching ways on Sept. 5, 1956, after having been christened by Mildred O'Neill, wife of congressman Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, Jr., whose district represented the yard.
