Prohibited Activities

Big Thicket National Preserve hunting regulations prohibit the following activities:

  • the hunting of any game animal after the close of the State of Texas general season until the fall archery season;
  • the hunting of hogs after the end of February until the fall archery season;
  • the use of handguns or center-fire rifles for hunting;
  • the use of shotgun shells containing lead shot, or loose lead shot in muzzleloaders, for hunting waterfowl; (The use of non-lead ammunition for hunting game animals and hogs is encouraged.)
  • feeding or baiting wildlife;
  • hunting within 500 feet of any designated trail, roadway, or residence;
  • hunting within 500 feet of the Neches River, Pine Island Bayou, or designated Texas Paddling Trails, except in the Lake Bayou Hunting Unit;
  • the use use or possession of dogs for hunting, except retrievers for retrieving waterfowl;
  • construction or use of permanent stands, blinds, or other structures;
  • possession or consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a unit open to hunting;
  • flagging or other methods of marking;
  • cutting and/or removal of vegetation;
  • camping in hunting areas during hunting season, except for sandbars along the Neches River in the Neches Bottom and Jack Gore Baygall Unit with a camping permit; and
  • the use of motorized vehicles, including ATVs and motorcycles.
