2016 Tourism to Big South Fork NRRA Created over $20 Million in Economic Benefits: Report shows visitor spending supports 282 jobs in local economy
A new National Park Service report shows that 684,715 visitors to Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in 2016 spent $20,763,300 in communities near the park. That spending supported 282 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $22,328,700.

Professional Development Opportunity for Teachers at Big South Fork NRRA
Big South Fork NRRA is recruiting teachers to participate in the Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program this summer. The TRT program is a professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers to spend the summer acquiring new skills in experiential learning through a program provided by a partnership between the National Park Service and the University of Colorado Denver.

O&W Bridge Closed for Repair Work Starting March 6
Efforts to repair the historic O&W Bridge will commence Monday, March 6, and will take approximately three weeks to complete. For resource protection and visitor safety, the road area near the bridge will be closed to all vehicular and recreational activity during the construction period.

Contaminated Mine Drainage Remediation Project at Blue Heron to Commence January 6
The National Park Service is announcing the start of a contaminated mine drainage remediation project scheduled to begin January 6, 2017. To ensure visitor safety and resource protection, temporary trail closures in the Blue Heron area of the Big South Fork will start in January and be in place until approximately April 2017.

Wild Hogs Management at Big South Fork
Deer season in the Big South Fork NRRA begins September 3, in Kentucky, and will begin September 24, in Tennessee. During that time wild hogs may be harvested and during an extended season that lasts from the end of deer season through the end of February.

Big South Fork Environmental Assessment Completed for Remediation of Selected Contaminated Mine Drainage Sites
Big South Fork NRRA contains over 100 abandoned mine openings which are part of historic coal operations. Abandoned mines produced waste rock, open portals and, in some cases, contaminated mine drainage, which are human safety and environmental hazards. Some sites contain unique cultural and natural resources.
