O&W Bridge Closed for Repair Work Starting March 6
Efforts to repair the historic O&W Bridge will commence Monday, March 6, and will take approximately three weeks to complete. For resource protection and visitor safety, the road area near the bridge will be closed to all vehicular and recreational activity during the construction period.

Recent rain showers and cooler weather have reduced fire activity and Big South Fork NRRA officials have lifted the ban on open fires in the park.

Contaminated Mine Drainage Remediation Project at Blue Heron to Commence January 6
The National Park Service is announcing the start of a contaminated mine drainage remediation project scheduled to begin January 6, 2017. To ensure visitor safety and resource protection, temporary trail closures in the Blue Heron area of the Big South Fork will start in January and be in place until approximately April 2017.

Cemetery Visit Assistance Offered by Big South Fork NRRA
Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area will provide assistance on October 28-29 for family members who wish to visit remote cemeteries and do minor clean-up of graves of their relatives. This assistance will be provided to the park cemeteries that are not easy to access and located inside the park boundary.

Wild Hogs Management at Big South Fork
Deer season in the Big South Fork NRRA begins September 3, in Kentucky, and will begin September 24, in Tennessee. During that time wild hogs may be harvested and during an extended season that lasts from the end of deer season through the end of February.

Big South Fork Environmental Assessment Completed for Remediation of Selected Contaminated Mine Drainage Sites
Big South Fork NRRA contains over 100 abandoned mine openings which are part of historic coal operations. Abandoned mines produced waste rock, open portals and, in some cases, contaminated mine drainage, which are human safety and environmental hazards. Some sites contain unique cultural and natural resources.

Big South Fork NRRA Launches Second Year of Every Kid in a Park Pass Fourth Graders and their Families Eligible for Free Access to Public Lands and Waters Nationwide
Big South Fork encourages all fourth graders to visit the park this year as part of the Every Kid in a Park program. The program gives fourth grade students, and those accompanying them, free access to more than 2,000 public lands and waters nationwide for a year. McCreary County 4th Graders to Receive Every Kid in a Park Pass
Fourth grade students in McCreary County are invited to attend the National Park Service Centennial celebration and reveal of the new Big South Fork NRRA film, “Generations,” at McCreary Central High School and to receive the Every Kid in a Park Pass. During the special event, student representatives from each school will join National Park Service leadership on stage to accept the Every Kid in a Park passes on behalf of their classroom.

Comments Now Being Accepted on Contaminated Mine Drainage Remediation Assessment
The National Park Service in cooperation with the Army Corps of Engineers has developed an Environmental Assessment for the Remediation of Selected Contaminated Mine Drainage Sites in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in McCreary County, Kentucky. The public comment period begins on Monday, June 20 and will continue through Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

Wild Hog Research Project at Big South Fork NRRA
To better understand the wild pig population, Big South Fork has partnered with the University of Tennessee to conduct a wild pig research project that will include the capture and radio-tagging of wild pigs with GPS transmitters. The data from this project will help to determine movement patterns of wild hogs including their responses to removal/hunting efforts and will also provide baseline data for the development of a wild hog management strategy for the park.

A National Park Service report shows that nearly 650,000 visitors to Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area in 2015, and spent $19.2 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 263 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy.
