Biscayne National Park and National Geographic BioBlitz Event
to Cause Temporary Park Closures

Biscayne National Park and the National Geographic Society are preparing for a special event called the “Biscayne BioBlitz.” This free, two-day, round-the-clock event will be held April 30-May1 and include participation of teams of scientists, naturalists, community leaders, students and the public who will join forces to discover and inventory every living plant and creature in and out of the water at Biscayne National Park. The event will cause some temporary closures from April 26 to May 4 to some areas of the park as outlined below. Additional information will be posted on the parks website at, or you can contact Tammie Renicker at 305-230-1144 ext. 111 if you have additional questions.

Elliott Key Day Use, Overnight Docking and Camping Restrictions

Day use, overnight docking and camping on Elliott Key will be restricted to those associated with the set-up, implementation, and take down of BioBlitz related activities beginning at sunrise on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 and ending at sunset on Monday May 3, 2010. Scientists and subject matter experts who are participating in this event and have registered in advance will be among those allowed to camp overnight. The Elliott Key harbor will also be closed to all vessels unrelated to BioBlitz during this period.

Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center & Headquarters Area Closure

The Dante Fascell Visitor Center and Headquarters area at Convoy Point will be closed to all public use unrelated to the BioBlitz event will be closed to all public use beginning at 5:30 pm on Monday, April 26, 2010 through 7:00 am on Tuesday May 4, 2010. (This closure includes picnicking, fishing, launching canoes/wind surfers, bicycling, jogging, etc.) The Convoy Point area within Biscayne National Park is the developed area starting at SW 328th Street including the Visitor Center grounds and complex and the Headquarters/Administration Offices. Event contractors and registered event participants will be allowed on site for set up and take down activities.

BioBlitz: “No Alcohol” Prohibition and Closure

During the BioBlitz event the use of alcohol within the Convoy Point area and on Elliott Key is prohibited beginning at sunrise on Friday, April 30, 2010 and ending at sunset on Saturday May 1, 2010. Alcohol will also be prohibited on any boat chartered by Biscayne National Park for this event. For Convoy Point, the area affected by this closure includes the entire developed visitor use area including the Visitor Center complex and grounds, the Headquarters/Administrative offices, all docks, boardwalks, trails, and roads. For Elliott Key, the area affected by this closure includes the entire visitor use area including the developed area adjacent to the harbor, the harbor itself, the Ranger Station, all existing camping and picnic areas and the ocean-side fire circle, which will be used as a camping area for the event.
