BioBlitz Temporary Closures

On April 30 and May 1, 2010, one of the biggest events in the 41-year history of Biscayne National Park takes place when National Geographic and the National Park Service join forces for a 24-hour inventory of the park's species: BioBlitz!

In order for the BioBlitz to go smoothly, there will be some access restrictions to particular areas of the park. Please read below for details regarding these restrictions and visit the BioBlitz page for more details.

Elliott Key Day Use, Overnight Docking and Camping Restrictions

Day use, overnight docking and camping on Elliott Key will be restricted to those associated with the set-up, implementation and take-down of BioBlitz related activities beginning at sunrise on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 and ending at sunset on Monday, May 3, 2010. Scientists and subject matter experts who are participating in this event and have registered in advance will be among those allowed to camp overnight. The Elliott Key Harbor will be closed to all vessels from sunrise beginning Tuesday April 27, 2010 through sunset on Monday May 3, 2010, with the exception of those vessels associated with the preregistered scientists.

Biscayne National Park's Convoy Point Visitor Center & Headquarters Area Closure

The Convoy Point Visitor Center and Headquarters area will be closed to public use unrelated to the BioBlitz event for several days prior to, during and after the BioBlitz event. Normal public use at Convoy Point by visitors (picnicking, fishing, launching canoes/wind surfers, bicycling, jogging, etc.) will impact the coordination of the Bioblitz event taking place in this area. The Convoy Point area within Biscayne National Park is the developed area starting at SW 328th street including the Visitor Center grounds and complex and the Headquarters/Administration Offices. For this purpose, Convoy Point will be closed to all public use beginning at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, April 27 through 7:00 am on Friday, April 30 and again from 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 1 through 7:00 am on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. Event contractors and registered event partners will be allowed on site for set up and take down activities during these times.

The general public is welcome to participate in the 2 day BioBlitz event, beginning at 8:00 am on Friday, April 30 and ending at 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 1. Parking for this special event in off-site only, and located at the Homestead Miami Speedway. Free shuttle transportation is provided.

BioBlitz: "No Alcohol" Prohibition and Closure

During the BioBlitz event, April 30 through May 1, 2010, the use of alcohol within the Convoy Point area, in the on Elliott Key harbor and on Elliott Key itself is prohibited. Alcohol will also be prohibited on any boat chartered by Biscayne National Park for this event. For Convoy Point, the area affected by this closure includes the entire developed visitor use area including the Visitor Center complex and grounds, the Headquarters/Administrative offices, all docks, boardwalks, trails and roads. For Elliott Key, the area affected by this closure includes the entire developed area of the island, the harbor itself, all existing camping and picnic areas and the ocean-side fire circle, which will be used as a camping area for the event. For this purpose, the special regulation shall begin at sunrise on Friday, April 30, 2010 and end at sunset on on Saturday, May 1, 2010.
