In honor of National Poetry Month, Big Cypress National Preserve held its third annual poetry contest during the month of April. The talent of the poets demonstrated in their submissions made the selection process a challenge one. The winners were selected by the employees of Big Cypress, based on relevance to the preserve and artistic merit.

Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is held every April, when schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

The annual poetry contest serves as an example of the national preserve’s commitment to supporting art in national park areas and the importance of showcasing the meaning of protected areas to new audiences through art.
