Join former Artist in Residence Patricia Cummins, and wildlife filmmaker Richard Kern at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12 at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center, 33000 Tamiami Trail East, Ochopee, FL 34141. The event is a reception focusing on Patricia Cummins' recent installation of work, Big Work at Big Cypress, at both the Oasis Visitor Center and Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center in Big Cypress National Preserve.

Cummins' collection is an exhibit that reflects the artist's interaction and interpretation of the landscapes of the Big Cypress. Cummins' pastel and oil paintings aim to connect the viewer to the deeper beauty of this unique landscape. During the reception Patricia will share insight on her residency time at Big Cypress and several other National Park Service sites across the country.

Patricia will be joined by wildlife filmmaker Richard Kern. Richard's interest in nature and art and his experiences with his filmmaking parents have equipped him to create intriguing stories about the natural world around us. Kern will be screening his new project Ghosts of the Western 'Glades, which delves into the history and geology of what may still be the darkest and wildest part of Florida. The film takes viewers slogging through strand swamps and explores the vast prairies and pine forests that fringe those swamps: critical habitat for endangered species like the Florida Panther. Along the way audiences will be witness to the miracles of metamorphosis, pollination, desiccation and rebirth.

The Artist-In-Residence Program at Big Cypress National Preserve offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the preserve's inspiring landscape. For more information on other activities at Big Cypress National Preserve click here.
