The managers of Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY) and the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge (FPNWR) are jointly preparing an environmental assessment (EA) in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act for the proposed updates to their Fire Management Plans (FMPs).

Considering the proximity of each management area and the similarity of resources and issues, the agencies feel that completing a joint EA will be more efficient and cost effective. This EA will analyze the environmental impacts of proposed updates and changes in fire management strategies, fire terminology, management of threatened and endangered species, and fuel loading that has occurred since the existing FMPs were approved.

The agencies have prepared a scoping brochure that gives project details and describes two alternatives for fire management. We are interested in your suggestions as to any issues and additional alternatives that you feel should be addressed in the EA. A public scoping meeting at which you may ask questions to agency staff and submit written comments is scheduled for 5:00-7:00 pm, January 21, 2015, at:

Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center
33000 Tamiami Trail East
Ochopee, Florida 34141

You can review and comment on the scoping brochure, and review the current fire management plans at Alternatively, you may mail comments to:
