Superintendent Tamara Whittington is pleased to announce that Big Cypress National Preserve’s Oasis Visitor Center will reopen Friday, October 6. Hours on Friday will be 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. Oasis Visitor Center will resume regular operating hours of 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 7. The Swamp Welcome Center will reopen by press release as soon as minor repairs are complete.
"I'm pleased to welcome back our staff, partners, and community to the preserve. The preserve's recreational opportunities and natural beauty offer a chance for renewal after recent events," said Superintendent Tamara Whittington.
Although much of the preserve will reopen on Friday, October 6, some areas will remain closed. At this time, Midway, Monument, and Burns Lake Campgrounds will reopen. Staff will continue to prepare additional campgrounds for the upcoming season.
The Stairsteps Unit of Big Cypress National Preserve will remain closed to all recreational access, including hunting, until water levels go down.
Visitors to the preserve should expect conditions to include high water levels, downed trees, and ongoing restoration efforts. Recreational users should be prepared to turn around. Landowners may continue to access private property and should expect downed trees along trails.
