Ochopee, Fla. – The 26,371 acre Parliament Fire in Big Cypress National Preserve is 60% contained. With winds predicted to be calm and the likelihood of fire growth diminished, fire crews are strengthening containment lines and suppressing lingering hot spots.

To date, “no injuries have been reported on this incident despite the fact that over a hundred personnel were involved in this effort,” said Acting Superintendent J.D. Lee, “Which is something to be proud of.”

In addition to the Parliament Fire, two other fires are being suppressed in the preserve. The 30 acre Little Cypress Fire is located north of Interstate 75. The ten acre Hotline Fire is located in a remote and isolated area of the preserve. Fire crews on the ground have been working with single engine air tankers, (SEATs), to drop water and aid in suppression efforts on all three fires.

Agencies assisting with fire suppression efforts include; the Southwest Florida and Caribbean Fire and Aviation Management Program, the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes, Florida Division of Forestry, Greater Naples Fire Department, the US Forest Service, Collier County Sheriff Department and Florida Highway Patrol.
