Local country music artist JJ McCoy and the JJ McCoy Band bring their distinctive sound to the Big Cypress Birthday Bash on Friday December 5 at the Collier County Museum in Naples to kickoff a two-day celebration marking the 40thanniversary of the Big Cypress National Preserve.
McCoy and his band have a southern country/blues sound reminiscent of Merle Haggard and the Allman Brothers. Born and raised in south Florida McCoy has beach sand in his boots and swamp water between his toes. The band's sound is ideal for sitting around a campfire in the Big Cypress –or for celebrating the 40thanniversary ofone of thelast wild places in South Florida where swamp buggies and airboats, backcountry camps and chickees preserve a traditional way of life established by native peoples and early settlers.
McCoy and the band will perform a mix of favorite covers and original pieces from 7:00 to 10:00 PM on the grounds of the Collier County Museum, 3331 Tamiami Trail East, Naples, FL.
JJ McCoy is the band's lead vocalist and guitarist with more than 27 years experience as a professional musician. Other members of the band are guitar/vocals Mark Storms;bass guitarist George Smith;drummer JJ McCoy Jr, and acoustic guitarist Jameson McCoy.
McCoy has received the Florida Country Music Association adult male Gospel entertainer of the year award in 2001, and the Horizon Awards from the Orange Blossom Country Music Association for both new country entertainer and new country vocalist in 2002.
The band has performed in several venues in south Florida, including several benefits that support children's causes. Songs performed by the band can be found on iTunes and iHeartradio, including the original "Sunshine State" - a tribute to McCoy's brother who served in Afghanistan and other veterans that long for home while deployed.
Tickets for the Friday night event are $75 and $125 per person. Event proceeds benefit SWAMP, the environmental education program that provides an opportunity for every 6th-grade student in Collier County to get outside and explore Big Cypress Swamp on a ranger-guided adventure.
