Belated Wildfire in Big Cypress National Preserve

Ochopee – Late on Sunday, July 1, a brush fire was reported in Big Cypress National Preserve. The Belated Wildfire is located south of Highway 41 near mile marker 61. The fire is showing minimal fire activity and is burning in grass prairie and dwarf cypress. The fire is approximately 161 acres and there is 0% containment. The source of the fire is suspected lightning, but currently under investigation. There are no impacts to the Kirby Storter Boardwalk at this time.

Currently, the 60-day ORV closure remains in effect. Private lands in the designated area; residents should use caution and notify the Fire Duty Officer of entry by calling (239)719-0241. Any additional closures will be issued by press release.
