On Friday, August 2, 2013 the 60-day recreational off-road vehicle closure will be lifted in Big Cypress National Preserve. This is an annual closure that is described within the Recreational ORV Access Plan. Upon reopening for recreational ORV access numerous trails in the Turner River and Corn Dance Units of the Preserve will remain closed until further environmental analysis of the trails is completed. People wishing to access the modified trail system should carefully review the most up-to-date maps of open designated trails. Maps can be reviewed by clicking here, or be picked up from the ORV office located at the Oasis Visitor Center.

Campgrounds in the Preserve will be opening through the month of August. Currently Midway Campgroun and the loop in the Bear Island Campground are open. On August 20 Mitchell's Landing Campground on Loop Road will re-open. Monument Lake Campground will open on August 28, and Burns Lake will open on August 29. Other campgrounds in the Bear Island Unit will open as the need arises. For more information on campgrounds in the Preserve click here.
