Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (NRA) has some openings for Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) positions in both districts of the park. The positions would be staffed for a maximum of 60 days from mid-June to mid-August. The positions pay out at about $13.40 per hour. A lifeguard certification is required and CPR certification is also recommended. The park is seeking responsible, reliable and attentive guards for these sometimes demanding positions.
These positions serve as a water-front lifeguard at either Ok-A-Beh Swim Beach in the North District or Horseshoe Bend Swim Beach in the South District at Bighorn Canyon NRA. These are public safety positions.
These positions perform aquatic rescues and supervise swimmers and beach users to ensure safe and socially acceptable behavior. They maintain constant watch over assigned beach and water area to prevent accidents and water oriented emergencies, and warn swimmers and snorkelers of hazards such as dangerous shore breaks.
The incumbent may be called to perform water rescues in the lake under difficult conditions. The incumbent must be able to swim long distances in open water, be physically able to handle struggling victims in water situations and to work under extreme physical and mental stress.
The incumbent will spend a majority of time out of doors. Weather is sometimes cool and damp with direct exposure to rain. Most other times the incumbent is exposed to long periods of direct sun, wind or blowing sand, torrential downpours, haze and times of heavy insects.
