Bighorn Canyon NRA Campfire Programs to Start June 1st


Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area will begin summer campfire programs on June 1st. All programs start at 8:00pm unless otherwise stated. They will be presented at the amphitheater located in the Horseshoe Bend Campground. The Horseshoe Bend Campground is 11 miles away from Lovell, WY on Highway 37.


June 1st Ranger Williams will be giving a presentation on the atlatl. The atlatl is a prehistoric weapon that was used by Native Americans in the region. During this campfire talk Ranger Williams will demonstrate how to use the atlatl and attendees will have the opportunity to try it.


June 7th Ranger Williams will be giving a presentation titled The Fur Trade and Mountain Men. This program will have information about the fur trade in the west. During the program Ranger Williams will demonstrate how the Hawken Rifle is fired.


June 8th Ranger Kissner will be telling the Legend of Big Metal. The Legend of Big Metal is a story handed down through the generations by the Crow Native Americans. The story tells of how Bighorn Canyon and Bighorn Lake got their names.


Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area will continue to have campfire programs throughout the summer. The programs will be on most Fridays and Saturdays at Horseshoe Bend Campground. Fort Smith campfire programs will also start in mid-June through mid-August. These programs will be on Saturdays and locations will change. In addition to kicking off the campfire programs, Bighorn Canyon has been getting lake facilities prepared for the summer season. Some services have been delayed. All courtesy docks are on the lake. The concession docks are in at Ok-A-Beh and Horseshoe Bend. Docks are also in at Black Canyon and Day Board 9. There are no docks in at Medicine Creek. Floating Restrooms have not been put in at Devil Canyon or Dryhead at this point in the season.


At this time there are no gas services at Ok-A-Beh Marina or Horseshoe Bend Marina.


The Yellowtail Dam Visitor Center opens the 25th of May. The hours will be 9 to 5 through Labor Day. The Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center will start its summer hours on May 26th. Summer hours are 8 to 6 and these hours will continue through Labor Day.
