Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area will be hosting a Movie Night at the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center in Lovell on September 22, 2009 from 7 – 9 PM to showcase the new movie “The Geology of Bighorn Canyon”and show a preview of the upcoming Ken Burns PBS series “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Refreshments will be provided by Western National Parks Association (WNPA).
The evening will be kicked off with the showing of “The Geology of Bighorn Canyon.” In many ways Bighorn Canyon formed just like the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While the canyon may be over-shadowed by some of the other geologically rich national parks in the region, those who have come to know it, treasure the great diversity that make Bighorn Canyon a truly multi-faceted jewel in the national park crown.
After the movie Bob Cruz, Dr. David Lopez, and Park Ranger Jim Staebler, will share their stories on the making of the movie. Bob Cruz, who did the filming and technical work assembling the film, will be joining us from Bozeman, Montana where he is graduating from the Master’s degree program at Montana State University’s Film School. Dr. David Lopez, served as technical consultant for the film and crafted the new geology display and cross section in the visitor center. Both work closely with Ranger Jim Staebler who wrote and directed the movie.
After a short intermission, a preview of "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" will be shown. The hour long preview highlights sections from each of the six parts of the 12 hour documentary scheduled to debut on public television on September 27 (check local listings). This documentary series, by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, tells the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. From Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, the series explores the stories of people, from every conceivable background, who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so, reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.
WNPA and Bighorn Canyon invite you to come enjoy movie night and experience Bighorn Canyon as part of America’s Best Idea.
