An abrupt change in the course of the Rio Grande has given this part of Far West Texas its name, the Big Bend. The Rio Grande has for many thousands of years shaped the landscape of this area and provided water along a narrow corridor of the Chihuahuan desert. The Rio and its tributaries have and continue to provide vital water for plants and animals plus for over 10,000 years, humans have taken advantage of what the Rio Grande offers.
