Photo by Sally King The main trail crosses Frijoles Creek 3 more times on its way to the Rio Grande. Bridges are not provided beyond this point. Use caution. In winter, all walking surfaces, especially partially submerged rocks, may be icy. A very unique plant can be found growing along the creek in this area. Horsetails (Equisetum sp.) flourish in the water rich regions of Frijoles Canyon. Horsetails grow in two forms: one with bundles of slender green upright branches and the other with green segmented reedy stems. Only the latter form can reproduce. Horsetails are the only surviving members of a once-large plant family. Because all known relatives are now extinct, Horsetails are called living fossils. Horsetails can also be seen in Upper Frijoles Canyon.
