BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, S.D. --- Badlands National Park Superintendent Dr. Paige Baker would like to extend an invitation for all to attend a Holiday Open House on Tuesday December 12th at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. The Open House will be held during the visitor center’s regular winter hours of 9 to 4. The main event will be a special presentation on bison genetics from 1:30 to 3:30 in the theater. Other festivities will include door prizes, a children’s coloring contest, and complimentary cookies and hot beverages. The visitor center has been decorated for the holiday season. Please come and enjoy the lights, music, and cookies. Visitors may also enjoy the new exhibits and high-definition park movie Land of Stone and Light. Staff from the park’s cooperative association, Badlands Natural History Association (BNHA), will be on hand to provide Christmas and other holiday gift ideas. BNHA is a non-profit organization and proceeds from sales at the bookstore support education and scientific research in Badlands National Park.
In the afternoon, from 1:30 to 3:30, the park will be hosting a special bison genetics presentation. Dr. James Derr and Dr. Natalie Halbert, from Texas A&M University, will present the results of their extensive bison genetics research project at Badlands National Park as well as other federally managed bison herds found throughout the United States. Dr. Derr and Dr. Halbert are considered world experts on bison management and bison genetics. The presentation is open to the public and will be very informative. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to attend the Open House and afternoon presentation. For more information please contact Julie Johndreau at 605-433-5242 or e-mail us.
