BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, S.D. — Badlands National Park is seeking up to three interns to spend 13 weeks volunteering in the park as summer naturalists from May 20 through August 18, 2007. Take advantage of this opportunity to develop job skills, meet interesting people, and educate park visitors, all with the rugged badlands at your backdoor. Summer naturalists prepare and present walks, talks, evening presentations, and children’s programs to park visitors on the natural and cultural resources of the park. Interns assist visitors with trip planning at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, answer visitor questions while roving park trails, overlooks, and developed areas, and work on assorted projects and assignments, depending on summer needs.
Summer naturalists should have a natural enthusiasm for working with the public and find enjoyment in sharing their knowledge with park visitors. This opportunity would be perfect for college students pursuing degrees in outdoor recreation, biology, paleontology, or geology or teachers looking for a unique experience during their summer hiatus. Intensive training on program presentation and park resources is provided during the first week of the internship, covering everything you need to know to succeed as a summer naturalist.
Internships are offered under the National Park Service’s Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) program. Although the internships are unpaid, interns receive free, shared, in-park housing, park orientation and job training, some reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses, networking with National Park Service employees, and development of skills in the field of interpretation and the ranger profession. New in 2007: Interns accruing 500 hours of volunteer service are eligible to receive an Interagency Volunteer Pass, which covers the cardholder’s entrance and amenity fees to National Park Service and other participating federal sites for one year from the issue date.
To obtain further information about the internship and learn how to apply, visit http://volunteer.gov/gov/ and type the park’s zip code of ‘57750’ into the zip code search field. The Summer Naturalist Internship announcement will be displayed. A detailed description of duties and application requirements can be found by clicking on ‘click here for details’.
