Notes: Padre Och joined the Jesuit Order on September 26, 1743 and came to New Spain in March of 1756 with fellow German Jesuits Middendorf, Gerstner, and Pferrerkorn. In November he went as chaplain on a military expedition to the Gila River with Governor Juan Antonio de Mendoza and attempted unsuccessfully to establish a mission at Santa Catalina near Tucson. He was assigned to San Ignacio and served it and its visitas until just before Christmas, 1758. He did return back to the north, however, and established the mission of San Agustín del Tucson in 1757. In 1758 he went to Cumuripa where he remained until March, 1761. He took charge of Movas in late 1761 or 1762, but his health failed and he was taken to Oposura in May, 1764. From there he went ot Huasabas to recover and was sent to Mexico City on a litter in April, 1765. Returning to Movas, he survived the Jesuit expulsion, being imprisoned first at Santa María in Spain for three years. From there he was transferred to Cerralvo. He was released in 1776 and returned to Germany where he died sometime in 1794. |
