Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Continues Healthy Parks Healthy People Events in November and December
Appomattox, Va. – Due to increasing attendance and requests from visitors, Appomattox Court House NHP will be continuing our Healthy Parks Healthy People events for November and December on a limited schedule. On November 18th at 10 a.m., the Park will host a Dog Walk at the Lee’s Headquarters Pull Off. On December 9th at 9 a.m. a guided Bird Walk will take place at the Ferguson Wildlife Trail, beginning at the Appomattox (River) Wayside Pull Off. Both pull offs are located along Route 24 inside park boundaries. Trail walks are part of the Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership between Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and the Virginia State Parks Central Region. The program is available year round, any days the parks are open. In case of bad weather such as snow and ice, check the Parks Facebook page for potential cancelations.
Dog Walk: Bring your dog for a casual walk along one of the Park’s trails on Saturday, November 18th at 10 a.m., beginning at the Lee’s Headquarters Pull Off. Enjoy the fall air with your dog along the approximately 2 mile loop. Please wear appropriate shoes for walking in the woods. All dogs must be on a leash.
Birding Walk: Meet park staff at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 9th at the Appomattox Wayside parking area, next to the Appomattox River, for a walk to look for birds. The 1.5-2 mile walk will offer opportunities to find birds in and around a grassy field along the Ferguson Wildlife Trail. Come out to see and hear a variety of local species in their natural habitat. Several species of Sparrow and other songbirds spend the winter in and around open fields like the one in the Park. Dress accordingly for an outdoor walk, and wear comfortable shoes. Novices to experienced birders are welcome. Binoculars will be provided, or bring your own.
The Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership is composed of seven area parks including Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Bear Creek Lake State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park, Holliday Lake State Park, James River State Park, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and Twin Lakes State Park. Our mission is to showcase healthy recreational opportunities on public lands and encourage stewardship of these special places.
