Saturday, April 16th, 2016-National Junior Ranger Day at Antietam, 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.-Young people ages four to twelve can participate in special programs, interact with a volunteer portraying a Civil War soldier, have the opportunity to become Junior Park Rangers, and take part in a family hike at 1:00 p.m that will allow visitors to learn about two historic farmhouses on the battlefield.
Schedule of Events:
10:00 a.m. Junior Park Ranger Activity-Meets in front of the park visitor center. Children (and their parents/chaperone) will complete the Junior Park Ranger Activity Books. Park rangers and park volunteers will be available to help. Upon completion, children will receive a Junior Park Ranger Badge and Certificate with their name on it. (Most activity books will take about one-hour to complete depending on age). ***This year only! A special NPS Centennial Junior Ranger Activity Book and Badge will be available! ***
11:30 a.m. Civil War Soldier Program-Meets at the New York State Monument near the visitor center. Living historian/s portraying Civil War Soldiers will enlist the children into the army, teach them how a soldier marched, and discuss the life of the common soldier. (1/2 hour)
11:30-1:00 p.m. Free time to explore the visitor center and eat lunch. There will also be an activity table set up at the visitor center with crafts and 19th Century games.
1:00 p.m. Family Hike with a Park Ranger-Meets at the New York State Monument near the visitor center. (appox. 1.5 miles)
