Strenuous Trails

These trails include steep grades and steady climbs. Trails with iron rungs are not recommended for small children, and pets are not allowed on trails with iron rung ladders.

Acadia Mountain Trail
Views of Somes Sound, steep descent to fire road.
Starts/ends at: Acadia Mountain Parking Area
Round-trip distance: 2.5 miles (4 km)

Beehive Trail (return via Bowl Trail)
Iron rungs on ledges of exposed cliffs. Very steep.
Starts/ends at: 100 feet north of Sand Beach Parking Area
Round-trip distance: 1.6 miles (2.6 km)

Beachcroft Path
Rocky, open slopes, rock paving
Starts/ends at: ME 3 at the north end of The Tarn
Round-trip distance: 2.4 miles (3.9 km)

Cadillac South Ridge Trail
Forest opening to gentle granite ascent, exposed ridge.
Starts/ends at: ME 3, 100 feet south of Blackwoods Campground entrance
One-way distance: 2.4 miles (3.9 km)

Dorr Mountain, Ladder Trail to Schiff Path and return via South Ridge Dorr Trail to Canon Brook Trail
Stone steps and iron rungs to open ridge and forest
Starts/ends at: ME 3, at the south end of The Tarn
Round-trip distance: 3.3 miles (5.3 km)

Perpendicular Trail on Mansell Mountain
Rocky stairs, iron rungs, views of Long Pond
Starts/ends at: South end of Long Pond (near Southwest Harbor)
Round-trip distance: 2.2 miles (3.5 km)

Precipice Trail to Orange & Black Trail
Iron rungs and ladders on exposed cliffs, very steep. Do not descend on Precipice Trail.
Starts/ends at: Precipice Parking Area.
Round-trip distance: 2.5 miles (4 km)

Sargent Mountain, Giant Slide Trail to Sargent Northwest Trail and return via Grandgent Trail to Giant Slide
Ravine, evergreen forest, steep sections to open ledges
Starts/ends at: Giant Slide Trailhead on ME 3/198 north of Northwest Harbor
Round-trip distance: 4.6 miles (7.4 km)
