Fort Ross, a National Historic Landmark, consists of a reconstruction of the 1812 fort and several restored buildings, including the Fort Ross Commander's House, also a National Historic Landmark. Fort Ross was established by the Russians to facilitate open trade with the Spanish in California. The Russians developed an agricultural center and the complex became the largest Russian fur trading center south of Alaska. A church at the site, originally constructed in 1828, was largely rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake. The Commander's House is a one story log building with an interior chimney. It is the oldest original structure at the fort. Fort Ross is located 12 miles north of Jenner on California Hwy 1. The park grounds are open a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset each day. The Fort Compound, Visitor Center and Bookstore are open daily 10:00am to 4:30pm, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is a fee at the entrance. Please contact 707-847-3286 or visit Fort Ross' website for further information. |
