San Francisco's earliest commercial buildings are represented by the
Jackson Square Historic District. During the 1850s, this waterfront
area was constructed on fill, part of which consists of abandoned ships
that still lie below the ground. Among the ornate Italianate cast iron
facades are many buildings that survived the great fire following the
earthquake of 1906.
The Jackson Square Historic District is roughly bounded by Broadway,
Sansome St., Washington St. and Columbus Ave. in San Francisco.
