The original stone monument set in 1858 to commemorate the 1825 establishment of the boundary between Arkansas Territory and Indian Country. The boundary was "A line beginning on the Arkansas [River] one hundred paces east of Fort Smith and running thence, due south, to Red River." North of the Arkansas River, the boundary was fixed on a direct line from the northeast corner of Missouri.
