How to Apply for a CUA

 

Important Information:

 

Road Based Tour/Transporation 2024 CUA Application window is closed.

We are no longer accepting Road Based Tour/Transporation CUA Applications for the remainder of the 2024 calendar year.
 

Non-Road Based 2024 CUA Applications

The CUA applications for the following authorized activies will be processed through the new online CUA Application and Reporting System December 1, 2023 through May 31, 2024:

  • Backcountry Hiking
  • Bicycle Tours
  • Photography and Art Workshops
  • River Equipment Rental & Delivery
  • Tuweep Tours

**This will be a one-year CUA expiring December 31, 2024.**

The non-refundable CUA Application Fee is $350 for each activity-based CUA application. This will be paid directly through the online CUA Application and Reporting System.

Watch this informational video before applying for a Backcountry Hiking; Bicycle Tours; Photography and Art Workshops; River Equipment Rental & Delivery; and/or Tuweep Tours CUA.

The online system will close at 11:59pm on May 31, 2024. Applications will not be accepted once the system is closed.

We will continue to process CUA applications through June 30, 2024. Applications that have not been completed by June 30, 2024 will not be issued a CUA for that calendar year.

Required documents you will need to uploaded onto the online CUA Application and Reporting System:

  1. Insurance Certification naming the United States as Additional Insured.
  2. Operating Plan - Click to fill out form
  3. Guide Registration Form - Click to download (required for Backcountry Hiking, Bicycle Tours, and Tuweep Tours.)
  4. Applicable documents used to address client risk (Note: The holder is not permitted to require clients sign a waiver of liability statement or form, insurance disclaimer, and/or indemnification agreement waiving the client’s right to hold the CUA holder responsible for accidents or injury occurring on NPS property.

No Change - Authorizes guided day hiking and overnight backpacking trips below the rim. A separate backcountry camping permit is required for overnight backpacking.

Bicycle Tours

Bicycle Tours

No Change - Authorizes road-based guided bicycle tours. The use of Class 1 e-bikes is authorized with this CUA.

Photography and Art Workshops

Photography Instruction

No Change - Authorizes road-based above the rim instructional workshops that focus on the scenic, cultural, and/or natural resources of Grand Canyon to create an instructional based experience designed to improve a photographer's or artist's skills and/or techniques.

River Equipment Rental & Delivery

Equipment Rental

No Change - Authorizes delivery service of river rental equipment to Lee’s Ferry and pick up of same at Pearce Ferry for authorized private, non-commercial river permit holders. Transportation of clients to and from put-in/take-out trailheads for passenger exchanges is permitted with this CUA.

Road Based Tour/Transportation

Road-based Commercial Tours - bus, van, auto, etc.

No Change - Authorizes guided road-based interpretive tours, recreational shuttle services, guided motorcycle tours, and motorcoach charter services. Limited guided hiking above the rim is permitted with this CUA.

Tuweep Tours

Other

No Change - Authorizes road-based day and overnight guided interpretive tours on the Toroweap Road by motor vehicle. Day trips along the Toroweap Road with stock animals are authorized with this CUA. A separate backcountry camping permit is required for overnight use at Tuweep Campground.
