Park Roads

Please note that in spring and fall roads may be closed due to snow and rockfall.
Park Road Descriptions

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive	Paved Surface No vehicles over 24 feet in length allowed past the Upper Lehman Creek Campground. Vehicles shorter than 24ft towing a trailer also under 24ft are permitted, though proceed with caution.	CLOSED at Upper Lehman Creek Campground

Lexington Arch Road	Unimproved dirt road - rough and rutted. The road is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is not closed by the National Park Service. The road may be impassable in winter due to excess snow/mud, approach with caution. High-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended year-round. Lexington Arch Road is severely washed out. Vehicles will have to park approximately 1 mile before the official parking area/trailhead.	OPEN Hazardous conditions may be present, approach with caution

The Great Basin Visitor Center (in Baker) closes during winter months. The Lehman Caves Visitor Center is open year round with longer hours in the summer.

Winter Trail Information

Weather can change quickly at any elevation, so be prepared for harsh conditions. When hiking at high elevation be prepared for rain, hail, or snow storms at any time of the year. Temperatures and visibility can drop rapidly.

Most trails are at high elevation and have steep climbs. Be mindful for signs of altitude sickness such as headache and nausea. If you're feeling sick, descend right away. Sun exposure is also more extreme at high elevation, so be sure to bring hats and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and salty snacks for longer day hikes.

Campgrounds

Campground, Pricing, and Reservation Information
Many campgrounds require reservations in the summer and may be booked up to 30 days in advance. Make reservations at Recreation.gov.

Lower Lehman Creek Campground is the only campground open year-round in the park. All others close with winter.

Water is unavailable in campgrounds. Water is available at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center year round, and at the Dump Station in summer and fall.

Fire Conditions

There is currently no fire ban inside Great Basin National Park. Due to ongoing drought conditions, they are regularly in place during the summer and fall months.

Year-round regulations:
Fires are never allowed above 10,000 feet. It is never permitted to build your own fire ring. Collect only dead and down wood; cutting live trees or snags for firewood is prohibited. Be fire smart; do not park your vehicle over grass or shrubs tall enough to touch the underside of the vehicle. Do not drag chains from your hitch. Please practice fire safety and enjoy your visit.

When fire bans are implemented, the following regulations apply:
Fires will not be allowed in picnic grills or barbecues. Fires are also not allowed in fire rings in campsites, amphitheaters or other locations in the park. Gas-fired camp stoves are permitted as well as propane grills.

Be fire smart; do not park your vehicle over grass or shrubs tall enough to touch the underside of the vehicle. Do not drag chains from your hitch. Please practice fire safety and enjoy your visit.
