Campsite Specifics

Rattlesnake Mountain 1 (RM-1) and Rattlesnake Mountain 2 (RM-2) are small campsites located along the Old Maverick Road.

  • RM-1 can accomodate 2 vehicles (no trailers), 8 people, no horses.
  • RM-2 can accomodate 1 vehicle (no trailer), 6 people, no horses.
  • Maximum vehicle length is 25'
  • No Trailers

Primitive roadside sites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat gravel space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets, or other amenities are provided. The use of generators is prohibited in the backcountry.

Directions

Rattlesnake Mountain 1 (RM-1) is located on the east side of Old Maverick Road, approximately 3.6 miles from the Maverick Junction. The turnoff for RM-2 campsite is on the right, just before the road descends a steep hill into a wash. The wash will usually flood with a good rain, but access from the north is generally reliable.

Road Conditions

Old Maverick Road and the gravel access road are both generally well-maintained and accessible to most vehicles. Old Maverick Road becomes slick and rutted after heavy rains and may require high clearance or 4-wheel drive. Always check current road conditions with a ranger.

Vegetation

There is no shade at either site. Desert vegetation is sparse grasses, creosote, dog cholla, and ocotillo.

Views

Rattlesnake Mountain campsites are located on a plateau with an excellent 360 degree vista of the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert and distant mountains.
