Zion National Park Superintendent Jock Whitworth would like to remind park visitors that the off road use of snowmobiles in the park is strictly prohibited. Snowmobiles are allowed on the section of the Kolob Terrace Road which runs through the park, but riders are restricted to the roadway. The Kolob Terrace Road begins in Virgin, Utah and passes through Zion National Park on its way to Kolob Reservoir. During the winter months, snowmobiles provide the only vehicle access along the road. On a busy winter weekend, 40-50 snowmobiles per day will use this road for access to private cabins and the Kolob Reservoir area. The park is committed to providing access to the reservoir and other areas north of the park boundary. At the same time, it is critical that snowmobilers recognize that they must stay on the road while travelling through the park. The backcountry of Zion is managed under the 1964 Wilderness Act. The use of motorized equipment is prohibited. The area is managed to allow for primitive experiences, solitude and free movement of wildlife. Last winter, three individuals were prosecuted for illegally travelling off road in the park. Law enforcement rangers will again be conducting regular snowmobile patrols to along the Kolob Terrace Road this winter to ensure compliance with park regulations.
