  Tatonduk River Windfall Mountain Fire

  The following photographs are aerial images of the Tatonduk slump and fire (also known as the Windfall Mountain Fire) that was discovered in October, 2012, near Eagle, Alaska. An explosion was heard in Eagle, AK on September 27, 2012 and on Oct. 10 a fire was spotted about 2 miles up the Tatonduk River, known locally as Sheep Creek. By the 15th of October the fire was still going and was emitting steam and a sulfur smell. These overfllight photographs revealed a slumping area resembling a mini volcano crater. The area is about 40 km Northeast of Eagle. NPS and USGS geologists suspect it is a shale oil rock deposit. More information will be released as it is discovered through continued aerial surveillance and future on-the-ground study of this event.
