The National Park Service (NPS) has determined that a gravel bar commonly used in the past for 'bush' airplane landings on the Charley River in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve is no longer safe for such use. The gravel bar, located in proximity to Gelvin's Cabin on the Charley River, is known locally as 'Gelvin's Airstrip.' This unmaintained landing area experienced significant erosion from spring floods in 2013. Pilots are strongly cautioned to thoroughly inspect the gravel bar prior to attempting a landing. Any attempted landing is the responsibility of the Pilot in Command (PIC). The public is welcome to utilize Gelvin's Cabin and the surrounding area. Additionally, there are other landing options for skilled backcountry pilots to access the upper Charley River basin. All landing areas in the vicinity require short field landing expertise and landing site evaluation skills. The NPS urges pilots to fly within their skill level and the capabilities of their aircraft. During the summer of 2014, the NPS will be looking for possible safe landing area(s) in the vicinity of Gelvin's Cabin that we could suggest for accessing this remote part of the Preserve by small airplane.
