Description

The Yellow-Billed Loon is a species that is monitored by the Arctic Network of Inventory and Management and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. They are considered to be a species of concern and an important indicator of ecological health. In this program, students learn about the adaptations that allow the loon to be a successful predator. Through games, simulations, role-playing and multi-media presentations, they are also introduced to the concept of bio-accumulation and explore the challenges these birds face in their daily life on the arctic tundra and during migrations to unprotected lands far from their summer home. Students will be introduced to the research techniques and tools used by field biologists that work for the Arctic Network of Inventory and Management.

The world-class exhibits at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center enhance the field trip experience with dioramas of boreal forest and tundra landscapes, cultural artifacts and displays of Alaska’s varied natural resources. Teachers may choose from an array of age-appropriate “I Spy” scavenger hunts that guide students' visit to the exhibits. Teachers may also schedule a film to complement their field trip (dependent on theater availability).
