Yosemite National Park announces the end of the fire season, today, October 8, 2010. Yosemite National Park experienced measurable precipitation earlier this week. The rainfall measurement, from park weather stations, recorded approximately 3.5 inches of rain in Wawona and Yosemite Valley. Additionally, over 3 inches of snow fell in Tuolumne Meadows. Closure of the fire season occurs when there is a season ending precipitation event totaling 2 inches or more. The end of this year’s fire season is earlier than previous years due to the amount of precipitation. Over the past several days, Yosemite National Park recorded roughly 1,200 lightning strikes, with confirmed ignition of 15 small fires. All of these fires are located within the Yosemite wilderness and are not a threat to park facilities or visitors. Fire personnel will continue to monitor these recent lighting fires. They are not expected to grow significantly. |
