Before You Arrive

You and your students are planning your own discovery of Yosemite. You may call it a field trip, but every visit to Yosemite becomes a visit of discovery. Dr. Carl Sharsmith, a Yosemite Park Ranger for 63 years, recognized the pattern of discovery. He said:

El CapitanWhen you first come to Yosemite you learn the names of the waterfalls. Then it’s “Oh, there’s El Capitan!” Pretty soon you want to know, “Is that a Ponderosa pine or a Jeffrey?” and the names of the oaks and all the other trees. You get down to mammals, birds and flowers. Finally, when you’re at my stage, you’re discovering the smallest kinds of things.
