Yosemite Fire Update for August 20, 2014

General Information 

Dark Hole Fire:
This fire was declared 100% contained on August 19, at 1,080 acres. This lightning caused fire began on July 17, 2014 in designated Wilderness, near the Yosemite Creek Campground. The fire was suppressed by handline construction using minimum impact suppression tactics and natural barriers of granite ridgelines and rock out-croppings. Periodic smoke may continue to be visible from many locations within Yosemite. 
  • Yosemite Creek Campground has re-opened. 
  • Fire resources assigned include 12 National Park Service firefighters from Yosemite and Point Reyes.  
  • The fire perimeter is within Yosemite National Park designated wilderness. 
  • The Lukens Branch Trail remains closed.

El Portal Fire: This fire is in patrol status. Smoke from logs and other vegetation within the fire perimeter continues to be visible. Firefighters achieved 100% containment on August 4, 2014. 
  • The fire was contained at 4,689 acres. 
  • The fire is in patrol status. 
  • The fire is on both NPS lands and Stanislaus National Forest. 
  • The fire began on July 26, at approximately 3:15 PM, near the community of El Portal. 
Campgrounds & Roads Affected 
  • Yosemite Creek Campground has re-opened. 
  • The Yosemite Creek Trail has been re-opened. 
  • All park roads are open. 
  • All other park campgrounds remain open. 
  • The Merced Grove of the giant Sequoias is open to visitors. 
Other Yosemite Fires –July Lightning caused fires 
The Cathedral (2 acres), Starr King (.75 acres), and Lembert (unable to locate, but light smoke is in the area) continue to show fire activity and smoke is visible. These high elevation fires remain small and are smoldering and creeping through surface fuels. 

As with any fire incident in Yosemite National Park, firefighter and public safety is our number one priority. We appreciate everyone's assistance with this priority.
