3d Maryland Regiment

3d Maryland Regiment

Authorized 16 September 1776 in the Continental Army as the 3d Maryland Regiment. Assigned 27 December 1776 to the Main Army. Organized 27 March 1777 to consist of eight compaies from Anne Arundel, Prince Georges, Talbot, Harford, and Somerset Counties. Assigned 22 May 1777 to the 1st Maryland Brigade, an element of the Main Army.
Reorganized 12 May 1779 to consist of nine companies. (1st Maryland Brigade relieved 5 April 1780 from the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.) Relieved 1 January 1781 from the 1st Maryland Brigade.
Assigned 24 September 1781 to Gist's Brigade, an element of the Main Army. (Gist's Brigade relieved 27 October 1781 from the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.) Relieved 4 January 1782 from Gist's Brigade and assigned to the Maryland Brigade, an element of the Southern Department. Disbanded 1 January 1783 at Charleston, South Carolina.

*175th Infantry, Maryland Army National Guard, perpetuates all seven Maryland Regiments that served in the Continental Army.

Did You Know?
Thomas Nelson, Jr., is one of Yorktown's most famous residents. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, served as Governor of Virginia in 1781, and commanded the Virginia militia during the 1781 siege of his hometown. His home still bears damage from the bombardment during the siege.
