Ranger Adventure Hikes: More Information

Have you been thinking about exploring more of Yellowstone National Park's 2.2 million acres?

Perhaps you want to hike the backcountry, but would feel more comfortable with a small group. Maybe you are interested in learning more about the park from the expertise of a park ranger.

The National Park Service is once again offering Ranger Adventure Hikes, a series of 12 weekly park ranger-led hikes. The hikes take place in four separate regions of the park, each highlighting that area's distinctive hiking opportunities and features. All are sure to provide you with an uplifting, rejuvenating experience!

As you stretch your legs surrounded by wildflowers, forests and soaring mountain peaks, your park ranger guide will share stories of the park's land, life and history. Each hike is limited to a maximum of 15 participants, so you're sure to have an intimate, personalized experience, and you can ask any question that comes to mind.

Ranger Adventure Hikes begin in mid June, and will be offered every day through the end of August. The hikes last from four to six hours and range from easy to fairly strenuous. Some hikes are not recommended for people with heart or breathing difficulties or other serious medical conditions.

Ranger Adventure Hikes are offered as a fee program--those activities which go beyond the scope of our basic interpretive programs, serve a small segment of the visiting public, and tend to be relatively expensive to administer. Fees collected for these hikes go directly back into the program's budget and help provide staff and supplies for the hikes. They are not intended to replace free interpretive offerings (see other ranger-led programs). Tickets should be purchased in advance, and will be available beginning in late May at visitor centers at Old Faithful, Grant Village, Fishing Bridge, Canyon, or Mammoth. The cost is $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 7 - 15, and free for children up to 6 years old.

Since the hikes start at 7:30 or 8:00 AM and because of possible road construction delays, you are encouraged to stay in an area of the park relatively close to the hike location. For more information about this hiking program, please read individual hike descriptions, inquire at any park visitor center when you arrive at the park, or call the Albright Visitor Center at (307) 344-2263. The wild awaits you!
